As usual my family and I traveled up North to the Bay Area to spend time with family during the holidays, this year one of my best friends Sydney happened to be in San Francisco and we decided to meet up in the city for some Dim Sum in Chinatown. My mom decided to take us to the Great Eastern Restaurant. It was very packed inside but that’s always a great sign when eating out, especially since it was our first time eating there. Basically dim sum consists of small plates of various items. Usually you are seated at a circular table with a big lazy susan in the middle and you wait ‘til the waitresses come around with either trays or carts full of each dish and you choose which one you want. But this restaurant was a bit different because you had to order off a menu instead. I definitely felt the lack of Dim Sum “experience”, nonetheless, the food was great.

First we ate these fried balls filled with minced meat. I like fried everything, so this was perfect and the meat was seasoned with a lot of ginger which tasted amazing.

We also had various dumplings either filled with chicken or shrimp. They were both very steaming hot and tasty.

These were also very delicious, these are chicken pot stickers served with sweet red sauce. Yumsauce.

These were definitely my favorite. These are crab fritters, which were perfectly crispy and filled with tons of crab meat.

Ummmm…so my mom wanted to order sesame balls because those are our favorite desserts when it comes to dim sum, but she accidentally ordered something else. It was very similar except the consistency was very different. Inside was a black liquid-y substance, I guess if you ignore the liquid-y-ness and ignore the black color it tasted pretty good, but I just couldn’t stop thinking about what it looked like. So in conclusion I wasn’t too fond of these.

But don’t fret! We soon found the beloved sesame balls! So sesame balls are sweet fried deliciousness filled with a sweet mungo bean paste and rolled in sesame seeds. I like them because they are crispy and have the perfect amount of sweetness. And the sesame seeds add a little greasiness from the oil. So good. DELICIOUS!
